Main Focus: Jesus Redeems
(Jesus Reinstates Peter--John 21)
Anticipate: Full Circle Dominos
Peter’s story today shows how his life returned “full circle” after Jesus died. He was a fisherman by trade and after denying Christ in fear when Jesus was on trial He returned to what he knew best as if the past few years had never happened. Jesus found Him fishing and closed the circle on Peter’s old path and opened a circle on a new life as one of the foundations of the early church.

Memory Verse:
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I now life in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." --Galatians 2:20

After Jesus was raised from death, He commanded the disciples to stay in Galilee.  While the disciples waited, Peter and the others went fishing.  Catching nothing, they heard a voice calling them to cast the net to the other side of the boat.  Following the call, they caught 153 fish!  Peter recognized the voice and swam to shore to Jesus.  There on the shore, a fire was already prepared for the disciples to have breakfast with Jesus.  Jesus, then, took time to ask Peter an important question and commission him three times.  Jesus not only was calling Peter to be the Rock for Jesus' church, Jesus was redeeming Peter from his denial of Jesus 3 times right before the crucifixion.  Jesus gave Peter a 2nd chance to declare his love for Jesus and Jesus assured Peter of His forgiveness.  With the freedom from guilt and shame, Peter would be able to live out his new name, "the Rock," and continue his calling to built the churches for his Lord.

RESPOND: The Peter Rock

Today we are going to make a ROCK of our own to remind us that Jesus can redeem any action we take and bring us back to His circle for our lives. This “Peter” Rock should remind us that if we are willing to repent of our actions, God will not only forgive us, but use our mistakes for good. Peter never forgot his denials of Christ, never forgot his betrayal, but he also never forgot that in spite of them, God build His church on Peter’s faith.

Bless:

May our children know that they are God's children and that He can bring good things out of hard things.  May they know Jesus as their personal Redeemer and be filled with joy because of His love for them.
